5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Four Year Old Birthday Present   August 16, 2001

When all the other birthday presents were getting old, my four year old grandson had a fascinating project to watch. We watched as the larvae increased dramatically in size, formed chrysalides and turned into butterflies. One chrysalide was not able to break out of it's shell completly and my grandson said "that one is not having good luck, is it", a good lesson in life. The others made it just fine, we released them and I had a painted lady to light on my shoulder and another crawl on my finger in the yard in the following weeks. Of course I am convinced that they were ours! They thought of everything and actually arrived on the exact day I requested! What a wonderful experience for both of us!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent and educational experience. Must try   August 14, 2001

I recommend this as an educational and awesome experience. It was just unbelievable how a small caterpiller could get so big and go through the stages of becoming a butterfly. Then to let them go to experience their new life. We would probably try this again.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Science School Project   July 31, 2001

We got this butterfly garden for my daughter's 8th grade science project. She is thrilled about it and gives it a big two thumbs up. Butterflies haven't come yet, but will get here after vacation for us. You can have the butterflies sent whenever you want. I really liked that part.

5 out of 5 stars We really enjoyed it!   July 27, 2001

The caterpillars arrived pretty quickly after we sent the card in to request them. They were super teeny but quickly ate their way up to a chunky size. We were amazed at how quickly they beefed up! All 5 survived. We really enjoyed watching them emerge and releasing them into our garden after a day or two of keeping them in the observation box. This was very educational. It gave the kids a great appreciation of butterflies.

2 out of 5 stars The most sickly butterflies I've ever seen!   June 21, 2001

We have bought "butterfly kits" before. I would recommend butterfly kits to everyone, just not this company's. By the time the caterpillars arrived, they had already formed their cocoons. So, my kids were unable to watch them as caterpillars. Then, because they had been jostled around in their cocoon stage, one of them fell off the ceiling. The box said to put the fallen cocoons gently on the floor of the box, but I would not recommend this; just quietly throw them away. Instead of becoming a butterfly, we got to watch that chrysalid slowly darken and become scarier looking. Out of the remaining 4 chrysalids, 1 butterly was unable to open and spread its wings, so it eventually died of starvation or something, and another one never flew away, but staying in the box and died. We only had two healthy butterflies fly away.

Needless to say we learned very little about metamorphosis, and a lot about DEATH and DYING!

Get a kit from a different company and save yourself the grief!
