5 out of 5 stars I'm not a big gamer, but WOW. awesome machine   December 17, 2007

Blu-ray
I bought the original ps2 back when i was in junior high, it broke about a year later and ever since then i have been playing FPS games on the pc from time to time. Now that i have a 1080p Sharp Aquos i wanted a high def media player that supported it. Considering a stand alone BD player is around $500-$600 this was an obvious choice for me. I'm not sure what i was expecting exactly but i have been blown away by this system. Blu-ray movies look and sound amazing (i.e. the sandman scenes from the included Spiderman III movie). I was also impressed by the offer for 5 BD movies, which i am waiting very patiently for. I have always been a big fan of the FIFA franchise despite its ups and downs in quality.

Games
-I was hesitant about playing an FPS like Call of Duty 4 with a controller instead of a mouse but i have come to enjoy it. The graphics are amazing but getting multiplayer to work was frustrating (turns out it was an easy fix by opening several ports on the router).
-Before i bought my system i researched reviews on it for weeks and i heard a lot people complaining about a lack of ps3 exclusives as well as crappy ports from other platforms. I'm sure this is a valid point but i just finished playing the demo for Uncharted: Drake's fortune and i am hooked. Also, Metal gear solid 4 looks enticing.
-Also, now that i have converted to laptop computers i can't get a decent video card unless i spend ~$1500+ so this is a welcome alternative
Online
-Free online features!! really didn't want to pay just for online gaming (xbox live)
-the built in browser on the ps3 has come to be one of my favorite features. i can easily browse the internet and even do online shopping. using a mouse to surf the internet from the couch wouldn't be feasible and somehow the ps3 controller is very functional. The browser even supports plug ins for watching online streaming videos.
-One thing i would really appreciate is a pdf viewer, but hey it's a gaming console
-I like downloading demos so you can 'try before you buy'. downloading demos couldn't be simpler, and you can set up a whole que of them and let them download while you watch television

This isn't a very comprehensive review because there are tons of other resources out there for more detailed specs, info, etc. If you were trying to decide whether or not to go with the ps3 or the xbox360 there are a lot of forums out there with useful information and diehard nutcases too. Personally, i would recommend this system to anyone with a high definition looking to play games and blu ray with amazing graphics and sound. I like the online multiplayer functionality of the games i've tried so far, but i've also read that microsoft has a much better multiplayer/online service although you'll have to pay for it.

Oh yeah, and i love the GUI on the playstation. it rocks.

I purchased the 40 gb PS3 about a month ago and have enjoyed most of its features. I am running it on the Samsung LNT-4061F via HDMI, with the audio on the Sony DAV-X1. The recent software update for the upconversion on normal DVDs was a big help-it saved me the extra hassle of buying an upconvert DVD player. Here's my take on this product:

The good:
I will start off by saying it is hands down the best Blu-Ray player on the market. I have helped friends set up various Blu-Ray players, namely the Sony S300 and S1, as well as the Samsung BDP-1200 and 1400. There are two main advantages the PS3 holds over these other players. First, the load time on discs is significantly faster. I'm putting discs in and the opening credits in the movie are starting within 30-45 seconds. The standalone players are taking 1-2 minutes on their best days. The second is the ability to update firmware with ease. The Samsung players have problems getting the correct firmware out of the box, plus the updates for them have been very difficult to get for friends and coworkers. So, as a Blu-Ray player, the PS3 is a 5-star. Easy.
The built in Wi-Fi is a nice touch, it's a cool extra feature to have the web browser available, especially for someone too lazy to get off the couch. I'm talking about both of us. Another big plus is the sound, or lack thereof. My XBox 360 sounds like its screaming while it's turned on, but the PS3 runs nice and quiet. This makes a BIG difference when you're watching a movie, especially one where it's quiet and the actors are speaking in low voices. The system stays very cool, again an improvement over the XBox 360. No awkward external power supply like on the 360 either, which is a space saver.

The bad:
Let me explain my stance on the games a little bit before I complain about them. On the XBox 360, there is an achievement points system, for those of you not familiar with it. Basically, you get points by completing tasks in different games, and you can compare your "gamerscore" with your friends as a sum of your achievements. As you might guess, once you start building these points, they get very addictive and you find yourself playing games just to get some of the points. Since I purchased my XBox 360 before my PS3, I find myself having no reason to buy any games on the PS3 that already come on the XBox because they don't have the points. I know that might sound stupid, but it's how it is for me.
That having been said, there is not an extremely good game collection available for PS3. Not yet, anyways. They have a lot of the games that the XBox 360 offers, namely the sports games, Call of Duty 4, Rainbow Six, etc., but there is no Gears of War, and there's nothing that even compares to Halo 3. That's just my opinion though, maybe there are games that you prefer instead.
Besides that, I have only one other complaint about the system. Though the controllers are wireless, they must be charged through the PS3 system once the battery gets low, and the system must be on to charge them. That means that if the battery goes low, you're either going back to having a wired controller while you play, or you have to leave your system on for an extended period of time so it can charge.

I hope my review has helped if you are on the fence, whether that's for a Blu-Ray player or a game system, or maybe both for that matter. Good luck with your HD experience!

5 out of 5 stars A great bergain   December 15, 2007

I just bought my PS3 with an HD tv, and let me tell you, that has been the best combo i've ever had. The picture quality of HD stuff in addition to a next generation disc player is just what you would not get anywhere else.
Although this version of the Playstation 3 is still in its early days (remember the difference between PS 2 and PS 2 slim?) and that incredible potentials for games have yet to be truly discovered, what you are really getting here is a real computer with blu-ray HD technolgy (HD-DVD market is just a passed-technology-based joke, no doubt about it) web-browser, hard drive (you can watch videos, pictures, mp3s), bluetooth wireless controller (works just fantastic) and a virtual "heavy-weight" black painted brick (this thing is HUGE) for a price which, by itself, it would not cover the expense for a good basic blu-ray disc player alone.

If you are thinking about PS 2 games compatibility, just consider this: even if you have never owned a Playstation 2, do you really NEED to spend money and time for an older technology? It would be like buying cheap regular gas for a brand new 600 hp Ferrari. You want the best? Then invest into it! Even when I try to play older games on this one, I just feel I need to turn it off again.

5 out of 5 stars A Great system! Far better than xbox 360!   December 14, 2007

I have been a big gamer for some time now, or at least since 1981. I have owned almost every system out there, including the well hyped xbox 360. I can tell you that my favorite systems are the Atari 2600, yes I'm a child of the 80's, and the playstation 2 and 3(40GB version)
I was looking for a blu-ray player for my home and I spent a week or so debating between the playstation 3 and a regular Sony player. I, after much consideratin, decided on the playstation 3. The simple reason was because it was the same price as the player but also it played games, and allowed me to store all types of media onto it, not to mention being able to surf the net.
Yes, I know this version does not play playstation 1 or 2 games which some people have really been up in arms over. This is silly to me. What do most people buy a playstation 3 for? To play ps3 games along with blu-ray movies. I myself have a ps2 for the ps1 and 2 games.
Now you can even get a free movie with your playstation when you purchase this version. You get Spiderman 3. By mail you also get 5 free movies, how cool is that.

Also, Sony has announced that they are going to be releasing a controller which will vibrate like the PS2 controllers sometime next year. I personally talked to a Sony rep about using the PS3 as a blu-ray player because some sales people had told me that doing that would shorten the life on it. Accoring to Sony, and many other salespeople, that is rubbish! That is what the machine is made to do. So, don't be afraid to use it even soley as a blu-ray player.

Bottom line, if you are looking for a decent entertainment system which is well worth the price, look no further than the 40GB PS3. At $400, you can't beat the price. You also don't have to worry about the "rings of death" like so many have experienced with the xbox. I was told by a salesperson at one video game retailer, that roughly 40% of all xboxes sold this Christmas season will be returned because of the "rings of death" which by the way can be caused by either heat OR simple hard drive failure. This can occur anytime so basically buying a xbox 360 is like playing Russian Roulette!
Get the PS3 40GB, you will not be dissapointed!!!
One final note, a good friend of mine at work had his xbox 360 go out on him only 15 minutes into game play. It obviously was not due to over heating. He tried calling Microsoft and said that they were quite rood. They said it would take about 6 weeks from receiving his unit for him to get it back. He is planning on selling it when he gets it back and getting a playstation 3 instead.
I watched the movie "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" over the weekend on blu--ray DVD. All I can say is WOW, what an experience!!
