1 out of 5 stars Don't Believe the Hype   August 3, 2008

I read many positive reviews of this game and was convinced to purchase it. I played it for several hours and lost interest. It has got to be about the worst story ever written for a video game. The characters are all shallow and not at all interesting. The gameplay is slow and repetitive, to the point where you feel like you are doing the same boring tasks again and again... oh wait, you are. The driving portion of the game becomes annoying very quickly... there is no realism.

This game is the violent version of second life. You develop a character by building relationship before you start cracking heads. Rockstar out did themselves with this one.

3 out of 5 stars Unbelievably disappointing   July 26, 2008

I bought this game based on the so called "10" reviews from the major outlets. I now no longer trust reviews from these so called major outlets. San Andreas was awesome, but this one is just... so blah.

Why?

#1. A story that went no where. "Godfather" of video games? That's laughable. There is nothing that propels the story forward.
#2. Characters that have no depth. Stupid villains and extraneous characters. I didn't care for any of the characters in the game.
#3. Gimped game play from previous game. They took out all the elements that were fun in the previous games.
#4. Money serves no purpose in the game! You can't buy anything in the game!
#5. After the first 3 hours, the game became repetitive and boring.

Rockstar, you've lost a fan.

4 out of 5 stars Fantasticly fun game with a few glitches   July 23, 2008
I had GTA4 reserved and I picked it up the day it came out, so I obviously got one of the first production runs. It has many glitches which show up throughout the game. Overall I had a complete blast, though I had to restart the console a few times. The graphics are amazing in HD and they should have fixed the problems by now.

4 out of 5 stars Just short of a 5star for many reasons   July 22, 2008
The GTA series has always been a lot of fun and has expanded more and more through time.
When I purchased this game and popped it into my X360 I was very excited. i know the graphics were tenfold more amazing than those of San Andreas on the PS2 and I was certain that all the same features would be included and so much more.
However, I was rather disappointed to find that many of the extra features that made the game really fun had been removed.
No more tattoos, haircuts, car mods or gym workouts. You could no longer fly planes or pilot tanks and weapons like the sword and flamethrower we removed.
It at first seemed like a terrible tragedy, but it was all made ok by the fact that this GTA game focused on real life much more than others. While the neat little extras were really quite fun, the realism of this game and it's own features made up for what was lost. Blasting 200 pigeons into feathers certainly had its own level of entertainment...

The story is really interesting and in my opinion has more purpose than previous stories. The side missions also have a lot more realism added to them and seem less pointless or weird.

Multiplayer was a bit of a disappointment.
First of all its not quite clear how to access the multiplayer. Once you get to it, its less clear how to get people into a game.
There are not as many people playing game modes other than deathmatch, which is rather disappointing.

All in all the game is absolutely amazing and is nearly perfect. I could only ask for a few more things, but Xbox live is coming out with 2 DLCs and so I am hopeful for more features and a few bug fixes (because a horn constantly blaring in a place where there are no cars is both weird and obnoxious).
