Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
With her now-classic novel Outlander, Diana Gabaldon introduced two unforgettable characters — Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser—delighting readers with a story of adventure and love that spanned two centuries. Now Gabaldon returns to that extraordinary time and place in this vivid, powerful follow-up to Outlander....

For twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to Scotland’s majestic mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones ... about a love that transcends the boundaries of time ... and about James Fraser, a Scottish warrior whose gallantry once drew a young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his....

Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful copper-haired daughter, Brianna, as Claire’s spellbinding journey of self-discovery continues in the intrigue-ridden Paris court of Charles Stuart ... in a race to thwart a doomed Highlands uprising ... and in a desperate fight to save both the child and the man she loves....

5 out of 5 stars A Hook is a Good Book.   April 29, 2008
All the pomp and intrigue of the French Court comes to life as Jamie and Claire travel to France to try to change history. Their efforts are laudable, but futile. Along the way with DRAGONFLY IN AMBER, Diana Gabaldon develops her vivid characters, carries two complete story lines and leads us up to the parting of the lovers as if we didn't know it beforehand.
The two stories flow seamlessly together: Claire's return to Scotland in 1968 and her relationship to her daughter who has been kept ignorant of the true circumstances of her birth, and the developing relationship between Claire and Jamie in another time and place.
OUTLANDER, the first in the epic will hook you, DRAGONFLY IN AMBER will insure you keep reading.

5 out of 5 stars Gabaldon   April 22, 2008
I bought this for my wife. This is her third time through the series. She decided that it is easier to buy them than to continue to check them out at the local library, as she intends to read the series several more times. It must be really good.

5 out of 5 stars Another great read   April 15, 2008
I normally don't wait a decade to discover excellent works of fictional, but historical literature, however that's what happened. If you're like me, better late than sorry my Grandsire used to say, ya ken?

I just thought I would leave a few words letting folks know that I really loved this book as much as Outlander. I admire Diana's style of writing as well as the historical nature that she presents so vividly. I have never really considered "romance" novels something that I would appreciate as a guy, but have found her work simply put, hard to put down. If you like historical novels, you should like these books as well. And it's not just history that she touches on here. Don't let the cover fool you. All the bases are covered and the antagonists and protagonists abound; There is blood, guts, sex, more sex, love, lust, murder, darkness, religion, strife, treachery, deceit, betrayal, sacrifice, war, death, sickness, and hope.. all beautifully written.

As with any historical novel, one should come away with a bit more understanding of what and how life was like in the period and I was not disappointed in the very least. Thank you Diana Gabaldon! I wound up buying the complete series based upon Amazon reviews I initially found after reading POTE and WWE by Ken Follett. I would highly recommend these two books as well as the first two works in the Outlander series. Having only finished "Dragonfly in Amber", the second work, lucky me, I still have 4 more to go! And if these two works are any inclination of what's to come, then I will most assuredly will remain content into the wee hours of morning for weeks to come..

5 out of 5 stars The beauty continues   April 12, 2008
Diana Gabaldon continues to keep me enthralled in her book. I found it very emotional, hysterically funny. She lets you know her characters..feel their emotions and feel their pain. I began the third of the series and these are books I will surely read again.

3 out of 5 stars #2 In the OUTLANDER SERIES   March 19, 2008
Outlander is a series of 6 books, quite large in volume. When I first read Outlander, I loved this story, and I loved the characters. But by the time I finished this book I wasn't sure I wanted to read the next one and find out what happened to Jamie and Claire. But as I said, I was now engrossed with the people and the story and so I continued. I am now half way through the 4th novel (Drums of Autumn) and already own the last two (pre-purchased A Breath of Snow and Ashes). And I STILL wonder WHY I am continueing to read these! And here is why, Diana Gabaldon writes in DETAIL right down to the dirt on someones shoes. And she says so and so got chills and not because the room was cold; so many times you want to wretch. She writes pages and pages and pages of things that have nothing to do with the story. You really begin to wonder where she is headed and you start to feel that she is either wasting your time or she just likes the sound of her own voice. OR she enjoys BEING this character right down to the last thought and shiver. I find myself speed reading through some passages looking for when we are going to get back on track. Don't get me wrong, she is BRILLIANT!! If you love historical fiction, you WILL love her writing and you will LEARN alot about living in the time she writes about as well as the Scots. She does her homework, her research is impeccable and she has a cult following with this series. It is a great story and I will read all of them, I just think she could have written the SAME story in half the time. So forewarned is forearmed with Diana Gabaldon. If you have tons of time to kill, this is your book!
