really good read July 1, 2008 Having enjoyed the first (Carcassone)book so much, I was apprehensive while waiting for this follow-up - they are sometimes disappointing . Not so with Terry, he has the knack of making you feel that you are travelling along with him, and always has a vein of humour running through, even when telling of daunting events. A really good read - my preference for "Carcassone" is just my love of France, this book is equally as good.Next please, Terry!
Narrow Dog to Indian River June 29, 2008 A really well written and amusing book. After ND to Carcasonne I awaited this latest edition and was not disappointed although perhaps I was expecting more travel anecdotes after the previous book and as I live within 3 hours drive of Carcasonne and on the Canal Lateral which flows through the town I felt I knew the area they were travelling through. Not so perhaps with Florida as the only bit I know is Fort Lauderdale and that never got a mention. However I recomend the book as a good read and what's next?
Can I crew? June 24, 2008 Just read both (Carcassonne and Indian river) for the second time.. Loved them first time, even better the second. I wonder how Monica puts up with Terry sometimes. The humor deserves rereading, as some of us of slightly slower brains might miss something the first time through. An excellent book, well written. I could believe I was there!
a cracking read June 11, 2008 Bought 'Narrow dog' and their other book after hearing the author and his wife briefly on Radio 4. I bought both to read on a trip to New York and I enjoyed them so much, I did what is really unusual for me, I read them very slowly. I didnt want them to finish. The author reminded me in some ways of Dylan Thomas. He is poetic, quirky and full of fun, in a dry old stick sort of way. Terry and his wife are obviously determined not to end their days in a nursing home somewhere, though clearly, Jim, their little whippet who hates the water, would be more than happy for them to give up adventuring. Personally, I would love to read more. Terry has a light touch, is clearly an educated man with a lifetime of stored literary references in his head, not to mention a determination to achieve 'the impossible'. Sailing a narrow boat across the English channel? I ask you! More please. About anything. I am sure I would be entertained. A great read!
this book is not only for canalboat enthusiasts and dog lovers June 9, 2008 One so often hears about the severe weather patterns of the USA but I had not realised there was such an onslaught along the eastern seaboard. This book should be required reading for anyone contemplating holidays or emigration in the area. This nail biting account of an odyssey, down the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, aboard a British narrowboat is often chilling but is delivered by the author with great dollops of humour mostly directed against himself. His descriptions are vivid and succinct as in the case of Jim the whippet who has "the eyes of Princess Diana, the legs of Sebastian Coe, the mind of Ronnie Biggs." In a land where everything from minute red algae, and unseen biting insects, to giant alligators is out to get you I was left thinking "it shouldn't happen to a dog!" The final touching poem to his wife (who must be a saint to put up with him) brought tears to my eyes. A real roller coaster ride of a book that is a sheer joy to read.
