5 out of 5 stars A book to fall in love with...   February 27, 2008

The start of this book, although interesting, seemed to read like most other `general fiction' books that I've read. Thankfully that doesn't last for long, as the girls start their journey. The story strolls along at a leisurely pace, until suddenly I was finding it hard to put it down. It starts to grab hold of you, and by the end, I absolutely loved it, and didn't want it to end.

The reasoning behind Mary's wishes remain a mystery until near the end, so you share the girls puzzlement along with them.. although there are some tantalising hints. As her story unfolds, it is interesting to witness the differences between the two time zones.

The ending is possibly slightly predictable, but is still beautifully written, and rather emotional. It was at this point when I realised just how much I had grown to know the two girls, and how I felt I had shared their journey with them.

This is another author that I shall be watching out for!

4 out of 5 stars A Dusty, Sandy, Torrid Adventure...   January 27, 2008

It was with a heavy heart that I began this book - I really didn't expect to enjoy it. I get bored easily and was concerned that there would be lots of overly-descriptive desert 'scenes'... How wrong I was! Clemmie and Emily - cousins with very different personalities - set off across the Sudanese desert with Great Aunt Mary's ashes to fulfill her final will and testament that she be scattered in a remote village. Many questions hang in the air - not least as to why she had such a wish - and as we travel across the torrid landscape, we are swept backwards in time by the narration of Great Aunt mary's best friend Beryl, and the story of why she believes she is a Murderess!
The ending is ever so slightly silly - though very romantic so you allow it to pass. All in all, a very good read...

4 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable read.   July 28, 2007

A thoroughly enjoyable read. This is the first book I've read by this writer; what comes across in this book is the love she has for her subject. Unlike one of the previous reviewers, it was the descriptions that made this book for me, so much so the storyline was almost immaterial. The beauty and harshness of the environment are portrayed so vividly that you feel you are there. The searing heat of the days, the intense cold of the nights, the feel of the hot sand beneath your feet, the motion of the camel as it wends its way across the desert, the colourful clothes, the taste of the food, the seedy hotels and the lack of water, the friendliness of the people and their reaction and acceptance of our eccentric, to them, western ideas and ways. The sheer resolve of the people just to survive in these conditions let alone eke a living from such a seemingly hostile environment is remarkable and it's all here in the words of this writer. If you are looking for something more than just a good read, it's here.

5 out of 5 stars Best book of the year   December 19, 2006

What a wonderfulpiece of escapism this novel was. I have not read any of Sarah Challis's previous books but will do so now. She writes so evocatively of Mali, a country she clearly loves, and weaves a magical story of loss and love. I couldn't put this book down.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent plot but rather protracted.   December 11, 2006

I hugely enjoyed Challis's earlier novels especially Blackthorn Winter and Dancing Hill which were more simplistic tales but with analysis of social issues. "Footprints" was a very ambitious plot, very ingenious too, but I did find the descriptive passages rather elongated and kept wishing she would just get on with the story. Characters were well developed esp. Miss Timmins but sometimes I lost patience with Em and Clemmie.
I much prefer the bucolic nostalgia of the Dorset village and hope that she retains this in her next novel. This was unnecessarily long for me.
