2 out of 5 stars Pathetic   January 11, 2008
I really hate these 1:50,000 maps.

Everything in them is far too small. Detail is difficult to see in the best conditions, so imagine using it while walking, or walking in the rain, or walking in the rain and fog. Can you still see it?

Even for those people who don't want to actually 'use' the map, the 1:25,000 explorer series maps are much better for understanding the area.

The only reason to buy a Landranger is to frame it and put it up on your wall.

If you want to find the 1:25,000, look for Ordnance Survey Explorer number 392. It's orange, and currently (2007) depicts the silhouette of a climber nearing the summit.

Good luck with whatever you need it for!

4 out of 5 stars OK for leisure users - walkers/climbers should get 25k map   October 7, 2001

This is a typical landranger product. Features are mapped in the right places, and the map gives a good idea of the shape of the land.

A lot of tracks and paths are omitted, there is some debateable contouring, vast areas of crag and rocky terrain aren't indicated, and half the paths that are on the map are difficult to see because of the marking of access land boundaries. Don't the OS know that all open land in Scotland is access land anyway? Why cover the map in meaningless purple lines? If we want to know where the boundary of NTS land is, then we'll ask the NTS.

Anyway, rant aside, this is a useful product. The Outdoor Leisure Map is better for walkers and climbers, and the Harvey map is better still, in my view. You just don't get as much coverage with a 1:25,000, so you might need to buy two, rather than one 1:50,000. If the detail on the 25k map could save your life then I think that's a worthwhile investment, otherwise you'll be fine with this Landranger product.

Brilliant, this is just the map you need. Nevis is in the right place and so are the rivers and fences. When it comes to mapping Scotland Ordanance Survey can't be beat.
