4 out of 5 stars A stunning guide to an underrated summer pleasure   April 30, 2008

This book just makes you want to strip down and jump into the cool, clean water of a lake, river or waterfall.

The photos are brilliant and evoke the simple fun of summer days spent dangling feet in gentle streams where trout rest under shady bridges and - for the hardier wild swimmer - a teeth-gritted plunge into a bracing mountain lake.

It's amazing that a guide book like this has never been written before. The sites all seem very well researched and are well spread across the UK. After a few visits to some of the places in this book, I think I'll be ready to start finding my own secret swimming holes.

Unfortunately, this book cannot guarantee good weather...(hence only 4 stars!)

5 out of 5 stars Stunning inspiration to get out this spring   April 26, 2008

I love this book. Just for the photography alone, it is a beautiful thing.

I'm all about exploring gorgeous places in new ways.

Britain is full of spectacular water scenery, but stepping in and becoming part of it may not cross your mind. If you are prepared to swap chlorine-reddened eyes and floating verruca plasters for exhilarating freshwater splashings with occasional shrivelage of privates, then swim wild.

I love hiking and often look longingly at the loch , but never think to take a towel 'n togs. I certainly will in future.

5 out of 5 stars Long needed guide to open water swimming in the UK   April 25, 2008

Daniel Start has done a great job in producing this guide to open water swimming in the UK. Lots of nice photographs and good descriptions of each swimming place. Read this together with Roger Deakin's Waterlog to get inspired about open water swimming in the UK. My only slight quibble is that there must be more places to swim in the UK. Daniel, are you planning a second expanded version yet?

5 out of 5 stars swim across the British Isles   April 23, 2008

As an avid fan of outdoor water - I always take my trucks on a walk - I can recommend this book as a vital component to any outdoor types. But it's also invaluable to families, with a host of easily accessible paddling places. It's got maps, grid references, closest stations, how to walk there, tips on getting in...it goes on. In some ways you could read it as the practical way to apply the spirit embedded in Roger Deakin's Waterlog. Get your kit off and dip in.
