Great for learning- but did it have to be quite so annoying? January 7, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Although this software is great for learning the basics (and especially the sequences) of driving, it is so hideously annoying that I can't stomach more than half an hour of being told that I "moved into the path of oncoming traffic" when I really haven't or the car's seemingly done it by itself. The irritating thing is that the virtual lessons offer no leeway and demand nothing short of complete perfection. Also the virtual test at the end is next to impossible and infact I have only been able to finish it once without quitting in sobbing frustration (and even then I'd failed). Also the pre-drive check questions at the beginning are mind-numbingly repetative and being told to "raise the clutch to the biting point" by clicking on an icon really doesn't actually help your clutch control when you get behind the wheel of a real car (despite doing it on the CD at least 1000 times). However, I do believe that with the patience of a saint this can actually get you through your driving test faster than you would without - and in the end, that's the main thing.

I bought this disc along with the others in the set(which by the way are fantastic!) but, i can't seem to get passed the wall on the second part of the introduction where you are expected to drive through the centre and turn left onto the road i seem to smashing the wing mirrows no matter what angle i enter from, if anyone knows what i am talking about and have succesfully passed this part could you please please explain to me how it is donethanks :) p.s i'm sure the rest of this cd-rom is fine.

I bought this last week along with the other CD-roms in the collection (Theory & Hazard Perception) and this isn't really up to the standard of the other two, even the style of graphics don't match (hello...continuity?). Having said that though it is pretty handy in some respects. The other annoying thing is the fact that it does't actually hook up to wheel/pedals (I tried with one of those old games console things) and it doesn't even say anywhere if it ever would so siting for hours on end clicking clutch and handbrake icons really doesn't help except for drumming the orders in your head. Its a shame it didnt work with the wheel...I was excited thinking I'd have my own little driving simulator a la BSM. Alas no. I've had driving lessons many times before yet never seeing them through to the end so this was the lowest of all basics (this is what the clutch looks like...this is why we shut doors properly) after learning a considerable amount and this CD just will not let you skip modules to get to what you really need to know. Although, if you're a beginner and want to look somewhat informed or 'swotty' when you begin your first ever lesson then this is good for you plus the price won't exactly break the bank. So overall its not without its uses and is good if you keep forgetting what order to do things etc. Oh yes and the mock practical driving test at the very end is strangely addictive, VERY informative on what you'll be marked on and dare I say it..fun?
The weakest in the series June 29, 2005 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Whilst the others in the series ("Driving Test Success: Theory" and "Hazard Perception") are excellent, this CD-ROM is a different story. It mostly consists of "3D Driving Sessions" which allow the user to drive around a series of "virtual" roads. Whilst the idea is sound in theory, it is so hard to manoeuvre the "car" using the cursor keys. In fact it soon becomes very frustrating. The "Show/Tell Me" section is also weak. It includes questions that you won't even get asked. It really over-complicates it. The only thing that really works well are the video clips of a driving instructor going through some of the key manoeuvres. This is excellent and probably the only section you will use. But there is a DVD called the "The Visual Guide To Passing Your Driving Test 2004" available on Amazon that does the same thing and is probably more informative.
More of a tip than a review. February 24, 2005 9 out of 13 found this review helpful
I got this last week and have had a look at it and so far it is ok. It said on the packing that a steering wheel can be used in conjection with this so I had emailed the makers, Focus Multimedia, about this and they said that a steering wheel might not work with the software. I took a chance and went out and bought a steering wheel, the Logitech Formula vibration feedback, but Driving Test:Practical did not recognise it. Fortunately there was a emulation program that came with the steering wheel which allowed me to use it with Practical and it works fine. To explain what the emulation program does, you map movemenets of the wheel to keypresses that are used in the software you want to use the wheel with. When the software runs and you use your steering wheel, the emulation program feeds the mapped keypress to the software, therefore making the steering wheel work with the software. So if your steering wheel does not have an emulation program with it there is a good chance it might not work with Practical.
