I love this device! May 6, 2008 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is my first ever satnav - and I am really happy with it!.
The main thing is that if you should deviate from the route given, it will very quickly pick up on this, and recalculate the route, getting you back on track. Very useful if you are in an unfamiliar area.
The spoken voice is certainly loud enough to hear out of the speaker on the satnav when on the motorway, although you can tune it in to your stereo and have it come out of your car speakers (or via an audio cable if you have an auxiliary socket in your car).
It bleeps at you if you're driving too fast on a particular road (should you select it to) and warns you of upcoming speed cameras (again, should you select it to).
Every time you connect it to your computer, you can update the information on it, so it is as up to date as you want it to be. If you notice an error on the TomTom map, you can even report and correct this with TomTom - including adding any missing points of interest that you feel should be on there.
It is certainly worth taking the time to get to know this machine before you use it, as it will do an awful lot of stuff (including being used as an MP3 player or allowing you to make and receive calls on your mobile via bluetooth whilst driving).
The battery life isn't so great so you will have to charge it quite soon after using it on a journey of a couple of hours, but it does come with a car charger so no real problems with this.
I am really happy with my TomTom and, despite all the stories I have heard about inaccuracies of directions, it has been spot-on for me so far.
Don't buy if you have a Mac April 22, 2008 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
Do not buy this product if you have a Mac as the support team only have Windows tools to fix problems. I bought a new map but after installing it the device is "unable to store settings: file access error". The only solution from TomTom is to plug the device into a Windows PC and run a Windows exe. So I'm stuck with a device that either won't work or works with an out-of-date map. AVOID.
Does exactly what I want April 10, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
My TomTom bluetooth receiver stopped working a while ago and I debated whether to replace it or use the money to get a hands-free set for my phone. The 520 gives me the hands-free capability as well as play mp3s and it acts as an FM transmitter so that I can play the MP3s through the car radio.
I spent a while searching for information on how to play MP3s off the SD card. I eventually tried putting an "mp3" folder on the SD card and it worked. You can have sub folders inside the mp3 folder (for artists, album, etc.) and the TomTom will find them and display them.
The unit has fallen off the windscreen twice since I have had it, both times because I attached it in a hurry. I find that if I moisten the sucker sufficiently and press firmly enough it stays on.
Attaching the unit to the mount with one hand is tricky. Likewise, connecting the charging cable with one hand when the unit is attached to the windscreen. I have got into the habit of plugging the charging cable in, attaching the unit to the mount and sticking it to the windscreen before I do anything else. That way there is no temptation to mess about with it while driving.
I haven't had any problems with navigation. Overall it does exactly what I want.
not good enough December 12, 2007 17 out of 22 found this review helpful
Likes: * FM transmitter for the mp3 player and route comments * Spoken street names * Looks nice
Dislikes: * The unit will not stay on the window * Map corrections don't appear on the unit after updates * After the first online update the unit stopped working until I put the backup back on. * Customer services don't answer emails. * Some strange routes chosen taking me off a main road and then back on for no reason. * Cant play mp3s from the SD card it must be in the MP3 folder on the unit. * I still haven't got the hang of putting the unit on the mount. * Dose not seam to be very accurate at telling you when I have arrived, sometimes not even close to the destination. * The Voucher code in the box was already out of date/not valid. * The bluetooth hands free does not work with my HTC XDA Exec.
I hope my opinions are of use.
Great, when the software is up to date... December 11, 2007 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
I chose this product primarily due to the faultless version of Tom Tom software which I used on my HTC PDA. Unfortunately, the mapping software seems to have taken a step backwards, as two major destinations I've wanted to navigate to in the first two weeks of use have not been covered. One was The Bath Spa Hotel in Bath, one of the country's premier hotels and near the centre of town. The software could not find the postcode or the road (Sydney Road, Bath), despite it being in existence for hundreds of years!
It's a shame as this unit is well featured and very intuitive to use, it's just the mapping information which has so far let it down in my case.
