Quick and easy route planning for your GPS September 1, 2008 The Positive: This is a really cool piece of software that is a 'must have' for anyone using a hand held GPS (I have a Garmin etrex h). You can construct routes with a handfull of mouse clicks and download them to your GPS in seconds. The software comes with OS Explorer maps at 1:25,000 scale which you can zoom in and out of and plot off at any scale you like. To create a route simply select 'create route' button and then select your map route using the left hand mouse button. Each time you click, a way-point (OS grid reference) is automatically added. The way-points can then be moved by dragging, or you can insert or delete way-points as you please. To transfer to your GPS, simply select the 'transfer' button and you are finished, as easy as that! Another fine feature of this software is the ability to turn you route into a three dimensional image. You can create a topographical image, showing your route on a 3D contoured map, or you can overlay your route onto a 3D photographic sattelite image which you can rotate to suit. There is also a route planner which shows the overall route profile - maximum heights in your walk, distance of walk and an area to add your own photographs along the route for future reference and record. The Negative: 1) Very expensive, 80-00 for Exmoor and Dartmoor? 2) You must have the required PC specification for this software to run properly. I have windows XP with 512mb of memory and that just about copes, ie. the spinning of 3D images can be a bit slow, but it does get you there eventually. 3) There is some distortion to the 3D photographic imaging - clifftops with rounded edges. The Overview: Would I reccomend this software? Yes, I was so impressed I've just ordered the Lake District too!
