Stop searching, get this book September 26, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Not having any experience of hill walking or map reading it's always difficult to really know if the book you have just ordered on Amazon is going to suffice. Will it be clear, easy to read for a beginner and will it keep my interest.
Well this book is a gem, extremely clear and easy to read and with the full colour photographs my interest is still with the book even though I am now at work waiting to go home so I can read some more.
Can't wait to try out my new found knowledge in the 'wild'.
"Put your GPS back in its box" September 13, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Do yourself a huge favour. Put your GPS back in it's box where it belongs and read this book. 100 times more useful and a tenth of the price of any fancy electronic gadgets you've bought. I know because Ive bought them all myself !
This book really is that good. Read it, learn it and then apply it when out on the hills and your will be better prepared than anybody else out there.
In a class on it's own February 18, 2007 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
This book is excellent!! The clippy card which is a navigational aid included and explained in the book is the best navigation tool I have ever used.....and I own a GPS!
Easy to use May 29, 2005 36 out of 37 found this review helpful
I bought this book to help the kids understand how to use a map and compass as my efforts had met with limited success. Within 30 minutes of using this guide they were all getting the hang of it and within an hour they'd all cracked it. Ideal for anyone learning how to get to grips with countryside navigation and is packed with clear photos and diagrams to help explain things. A handy book to have.
The ultimate guidebook on navigation skills. August 30, 2003 58 out of 59 found this review helpful
This book must rate as the ultimate guidebook on navigation skills for walkers. The book covers the basics of navigation for beginners starting out using a map and compass, yet it also covers more advanced navigation skills such as walking across hills and moorland. This book is relevant to many levels of experiences in navigation techniques. The book is particularly relevant to the UK market in that the author illustrates the navigation techniques using UK ordnance survey maps. My only criticism is that the author appears quite negative about GPS systems. Due to the increasing popularity of such devices, in future editions he may have ignore these negative attitudes and include a new chapter on using GPS alongside OS mapping. WELL RECOMMENDED!!!
