No more 'I said LEFT...' altercations June 27, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Having been a bit of a sceptic about satnavs - after all, what's so difficult about reading a map(!) - I borrowed this from a friend to navigate around London and am a convert. It just makes driving (even in heavy congestion) so much more bearable when you're not having to squint at road signs to check you've not missed the turn. In fact, it's been an absolute revelation.
Having not tried any of the competition I'm not best placed to give comparisons, but this did all I required it to do very impressively - so much so that Jane became one of the family - albeit one who's a little bit humourless if very forgiving... no tantrums if you do take a wrong turn, she just calmly takes a deep breath, counts to ten, and recalculates. I think I'm in love.
There were a couple of places where the spoken instructions weren't entirely clear, but one glance at the map is enough to keep you on track - with a readout for miles/yards to the next junction, current speed, estimated time of arrival, etc. The one problem was that the 'safety' camera warning sounded like and air raid siren, and it wasn't until I got back that I worked out how to change it to a simple bleep (via the 'TomTom services' icon). In any case, I wouldn't entirely trust it if I was a speed merchant - a couple of cameras weren't picked up. If you're on 9 points I would advise activating the speed warning beeper instead, which should keep you below the limit AT ALL TIMES!
It's possible to plan a whole itinerary of stops and waypoints, but you can also simply enter a destination and go. Although entering known addresses and postcodes is simple, it's a bit more difficult to enter less specific destinations (e.g. Stansted services) - though it's easy enough to add retrospectively when you get there by saving your current location as a favourite.
Overall I've been won over and would think that, in this price range, it represents good value.
P.S. A tip for those who find it keeps falling off the windscreen - just wipe the windscreen, dab a few drops of water on the suction pad and press hard. You'll then have a job getting it off again!
Great Sat Nav June 19, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This was my choice for my first Sat Nav device and after reading various reviews on amazon I chose this one for the widescreen, future-proof technology but more so for the ease of use. I think it works great, keeps everything simple and I haven't had any problems with the windscreen attachment. I would recommend going elsewhere to get a case. I got one from ebay for 5 - and its a durable but lightweight affair.
The only one thing I would say is the charge doesn't seem to last for more than a few hours - I have driven a 4 hour round trip and the battery was flashing red towards the end. But its not a big issue as the car charger is always there.
I would recommend this device to anyone.
Tom Tom has never worked. June 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I brought a Tom Tom XXL for my husband for xmas, he tried to use it for the first time 3 weeks ago. We put the car charger in and nothing happened!! We tried resetting it and all we get is a green light, no screen nothing. We have been in touch with Tom Tom and after a few emails we were told the would be sending us a return box so they can repair it. 2 weeks later we are still waiting for box and there are no replies to our emails!!! Thank you TOM TOM.
A really Smart Sat Nav June 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Tom Tom XL is the first sat nav i have ever purchased and i'm very impressed. The route finder is so quick and offers so many different features, such as different ways to take your route and places to stop off along your route. The safety camaras option is fantastic, everyone i went past, gave me plenty of warning. The main reason i didn't give the sat nav 5 stars was the fact it lost it signal once or twice, but this was in the most rural part of Scotland, so it may be forgiven and it did come back on 2 minutes later. As for the traffic, i have not tried this feature yet but it does seem quite clever and cheap once you buy the tmc.
A terribly useful bit of kit! May 16, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this about 2 weeks ago as I am having to drive more than I used to for work. We've tested it a few times lately and found it to be very useful. The maps are clear, easy to read and the display is informative and clear. It is also very easy to programme with a new location (especially so as I tend not to read manuals!). The additional features, such as ways to avoid hold ups and are also very useful. We live in a very rural area but despite this, we've had no issues with loss of signal or misdirections.
I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who needs a Sat nav system.
