4 out of 5 stars The visual companion to Blur's music   April 20, 2004

If you're looking at this, Blur should need no introduction. This istheir collection of promo videos for all (or at least most) of their bestloved hits. Each video compliments the song, in particular Damon's acerbicsocial commentary lyrics, and most add another dimension all together. Thehighlights are many, with 'Parklife', 'Popscene', the Orwellian 'TheUniversal' and the madcap 'Country House' (that must have been the mostfun had when making a video ever!) my personal favourites.
You also get various stats concerning each clip, and a preview facility toenable a quick scan through each clip to find the one you're looking for. However, a bit more value could have been added to this DVD with theinclusion of some extra material, such as live footage, and a decent (orindeed any) booklet. But it's the promo videos that we're really after, and this is it.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation   December 21, 2000

I have to confess that I'm not a huge Blur fan, but when "The Best Of" CD collection came out, I knew I had to get it. I had to get it especially for singles like "Parklife", "Song 2", and "Tender". I may end getting some of their other titles because of this collection (I also have 'Parklife')....

ANYWAYS, when I found out about this DVD, I took a chance on ordering it (not available in the States, unfortunately :-( ). The DVD has tracks not on the CD. In my opinion, the chronological order of the videos shows the band maturing over time. At times, the band is shown as goofy and funny (in a good way of course :-) ). And at other times, they're shown to be fairly serious. Listening to the lyrics from the tracks for 'Parklife' and 'The Great Escape' have given me some insight of life in England in particular(hey, I'm from the States :-) ). So, in general, this is a very good collection, and if you're a huge Blur fan living in the UK, you ought to get this! Blur fans in the US may never see this released in the States!

Outstanding tracks:

"Parklife": Phil Daniels is a REALLY funny guy.

"Coffee And TV": I must admit the little milk carton guy running around was really cute!

"Tender": Live, spontaneous performances tend to be better than studio performances, and this was no exception.

"Song 2": Also known as the "woo-hoo" song. Just them performing the song while being blown away by the wind.

"The Universal": One of the few artsy videos they did. A bit quaint, but well-done nevertheless.

"Bang": Just them hanging out in parts of London.

4 out of 5 stars Oasis vs Blur part 2!   November 21, 2000

So once again the giants come to blows by both releasing DVD's at the same time...Who cares though, it seems these days that all those britpop bands are just a fond memory, with only the good ones clinging on i.e. Pulp, Supergrass etc.

This DVD is great if like me you like Blurs singles more than their albums, you didn't want to buy the cd as they left off Stereotypes, Popscene etc and you want to show off your new DVD player! Shocking how young they look, and how super cool too, with Damon proving himself a great frontman on several videos. Don't know why Music Is My Radar isn't included but who cares, this is top stuff. Sure there are gripes with the disc itself, but DVD is still the perfect format for music videos like this as if you don't like a track you can skip it. Supergrass next please!!

2 out of 5 stars Charmless DVD...?   November 18, 2000

Finally, after years and years of waiting we get an official release of the promo videos for the first 22 singles from England's greatest and ... oh dear.

Now don't get me wrong, the videos and music are superb. For example, Coffee and TV, Parklife, Charmless Man, Beetlebum, Song 2 etc... And a real thumbs up to Parlophone/Food for even releasing them on DVD. It's the technicalities of the disc where things start to go wrong.

The encoding on the DVD is poor, with some pixelation evident. The picture quality of nearly all the videos is disappointing. Even 'No Distance Left to Run' seems to be a much worse copy than the one that appeared on it's own DVD a year ago! I have most of these videos on VHS already, and many of them are better quality than this DVD!

Then there's the menus. The main menu's themselves are simple (just a strip along the bottom of the screen), but they appear to have been put together using basic system fonts, giving the look of text on a 15 year old computer. And where are the extras, such as the US version of the "There's No Other Way" promo? Surely that could've been tagged on easily enough?

Oh, and "Parklife" and "To The End" are in the wrong order!

I know each of these may sound like nitpicking, but when you put together all these little gripes it just smacks of no effort whatsoever being put into the design of this disc. Which is strange really, because you would imagine a release of this had been on the cards for around a year now.

If you're expecting a solid package from this DVD you'll be disappointed. If you're just expecting the promo videos and you're not bothered about picture quality then you'll be pleased with this release. And if you buy the DVD then at least the picture quality can't get any worse.

I hope to see more Blur DVD's, but I hope they'll get more effort put into them.

This is the one all the fans have been waiting for. After the release of the singles box set it seemed only fair that they should release the videos for the singles aswell. This video begins with Blur as the 'baggy trousers, floppy fringes' image seen in Theres No Other Way and goes right through to them as they are now although Music Is My Radar was left off the recording. A must have for all major Blur followers (including myself).
