1 out of 5 stars Promised but not achieved   April 17, 2008
We read this book in our book group, and the majority verdict was that it is a lazy, sometimes badly written book which fails to work out its themes with any conviction. In addition there were mistakes in punctuation and spelling which suggested sloppy editing. One or two readers found the dysfunctional Judd family realistic, but on the whole (for a variety of reasons) we were disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Spectacularly dull read.   December 22, 2007

A set of bound, lifeless, middle class ramblings. Failed to connect with any of the characters and was genuinely shocked by this after the reviews were so good. I literally had to force myself to finish this and the ending was not at all worth the bother. Please, please don't waste your money.

1 out of 5 stars boring   October 22, 2007

I really hated this book and found it completely dull and uninspiring. I find it hard to understand all its great reviews but I suppose if we were all the same, life would be boring.

1 out of 5 stars A dull & comfortable read   October 9, 2007

This book was certainly not exciting. I came to know the characters but it was a comfortable knowledge of them. Like you know your next door neighbour. Their lives ran at a normal pace just like ours so I kept waiting & hoping for a climax, unfortunately there wasn't one! If you want a book that plods on then this is definately for you. If you want a book where something happens then DON'T buy this one!!

1 out of 5 stars Nothing much happened   August 25, 2007

In my opinion this book lacked any real depth to any of the characters. I can see that most reviewers here thought the same.

I didn't think that the book made any particular point and came to no particular conclusion. In lots of ways I found it all pretty bland. JuJu, to me, did not come across as the supposedly beautiful and brilliant person it was suggested that she was at the beginning of the book. Also I didn't particularly get any sense of the strong favouritism or feeling that her father idolised her through any dialogue.

As for Charles, he just came across as a sad disillusioned old man. Maybe that was the point! In anycase, I thought by the end of the book that I had not got anything much out of reading the book. There was no food for thought at all in this book.
